Preserving the Past to Grow the Future
Scattered across Modoc County are old fruit trees–some over 100 years old– quietly bearing fruit, season after season. Planted by early homesteaders and orchardists, these trees have survived droughts, harsh winters, and decades of neglect. They’re more than just trees– they’re living links to our agricultural history, and they hold the genetics of varieties uniquely adapted to thrive in our region.
In 2017, with support of a $10,000 gift, Modoc Harvest initiated the “Heritage Fruit Tree Project”.
The Heritage Fruit Tree Project was created to identify, document, and preserve these historic fruit trees. Through community involvement, orchard surveys, hands-on grafting and pruning workshops, and propagation efforts, we’re working to ensure these resilient, locally adapted varieties are not lost.
Why It Matters
Modern commercial orchards rely on just a few standard varieties. But Modoc County’s heritage fruit trees represent a genetic treasure trove– diverse, climate-resilient, and rich with unique flavors. They’ve adapted over generations to thrive in our challenging high-desert environment, often without irrigation or chemical inputs, making them especially valuable in the face of climate change. Preserving them means more than saving old trees– it means protecting a living legacy of resilience, flavor, and local knowledge.
By identifying and propagating these varieties, we’re helping to strengthen Modoc County’s long-term food security and promote biodiversity within our regional food system. At the same time, we’re honoring the stories and traditions embedded in these trees– memories of family orchards, community harvests, and the deep-rooted connection between people and place.
