April 21, 2024

Dear Modoc Harvest producers, customers and our community,

Thank you for your patience as we worked together to respond to communications sent out about the Modoc Harvest policy on feed inputs and food quality, and the closure of the Modoc Harvest Food Hub.

We apologize that this painful disruption happened to all of us. It was a shock to us. We are doing our best as an all-volunteer board to reorganize, and move forward with the mission of Modoc Harvest, which is to provide local food access and education in a way that is respectful to everyone, including this beautiful place we call home.

To that end, please know that:

  • Regarding the interpretation of Modoc Harvest Producer Handbook standards and policies, please note that this has not changed. It is the same it has been since 2015. In summary, GMO crops produced for human consumption are not accepted at the Food Hub. In terms of feed inputs, non-GMO sources are strongly encouraged. As an organization, we want to work with producers so that customers may know, through transparent communication, how their food is produced. In the hard and long-term work of moving our agricultural system toward one that creates health and abundance for all, we believe in meeting people where they are, and journeying with them toward economic, ecological and social well-being. We do not believe in, or will engage in, pitting agriculture against agriculture in our community.
  • If your perception is that all feed inputs for meat, eggs and other animal products sold through the Modoc Harvest Food Hub are currently organic (which includes non-GMO), please know that this is not the case. We encourage you to engage in conversation with producers about their production practices as a way to share your values, and to understand their unique context. In the end, local food is really about relationships. We are all in this together. As a consumer, you have the right to ask questions, and be informed about the food you are consuming, and feeding to your family.
  • We are taking all the steps necessary to keep the food hub open and in business through Modoc Harvest staffing transitions. As we work to fill our vacant positions, the food hub will be closed the week of April 22. We will do our best to be ready for orders to be placed again on Friday, April 26. An update on the food hub will be posted on our website, and on social media by end of business Wednesday, April 24.
  • We welcome communication from you. As we navigate this painful and surprising situation, please know that we are working very closely together as a board in a thoughtful and grounded way, guided by the values stated in our holistic context, which was first created in 2015 by the food hub planning committee. We commit to the behavior listed in our holistic context, which is:
    • a unified team
    • respectful of each other and the environment
    • a team of doers who get things done and work hard
    • open and receptive
    • innovative
    • reliable
    • practical
    • acting with integrity
    • happy

The best way to communicate with us is through our email account: board@modocharvest.org. The board is monitoring this account, and will respond to your email within 72 hours.

Thank you again for your commitment to healthy and accessible local food, and for all you do to make our community a beautiful place.

Sincerely,

The Modoc Harvest Board
