Community Seed Library
an initiative of Modoc Harvest, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
Our Community Seed Library is a volunteer-led, donation-based program that provides free seeds to Modoc County residents. By distributing seeds at no cost, the program encourages participants to cultivate their own gardens– promoting food security and emphasizing sustainability. Participants are asked to save seeds from their plants at the end of each growing season and return a portion of those seeds to the Seed Library. This cyclical approach not only helps replenish the seed supply but also empowers residents to contribute to a communal resource that reflects the specific growing conditions of Modoc County. The ultimate goal of the Community Seed Library is to collaboratively develop regionally adapted seed varieties, ensuring that future generations can benefit from resilient plants suited to their environment.

Welcome to a space for growing and sharing!
Some of the seeds you’ll find here are locally grown and harvested, a testament to the care and dedication of our community. These seeds are uniquely adapted to thrive in our local climate, making them a special part of Modoc County’s sustainable food future.
This library is built by the hands of gardeners with a range of experience—from beginners learning the art of seed saving to skilled stewards passing on generations of knowledge.
Take what you need, grow with care, and bring seeds back to share. Together, we are creating a resilient local food system and nurturing a thriving ecosystem.
